Each characters in Chinese, often carries meaning within itself. For instance this “易” character.

This character is made up of 2 components: The "Sun" character on the top and the "Moon" character below the "Sun" character.

From this character alone, we are able to see how the Yin Yang concepts comes about:

The sun is yang, the moon is yin. This denotes day (bright) and night (dark). Besides equal duration, it also denotes an endless cycle of day and night pattern, not at random.

Yang on top denotes that it is lighter hence rises upwards, where Yin below denotes it is heavier and descend downwards.

Yin and Yang can also be deemed as polarities (Yang as +, Yin as -) . The continuous movement (or energy exchange) between these 2 polarities is what sustain life. The crux of this character is "change". It is no wonder the ancient classic 《易经》is named <The Book of Change>.
