Ancient Chinese Compass

The Four Great Inventions of the ancient Chinese were:

  1. Compass

  2. Papermaking

  3. Printing Techniques

  4. Gunpowder

Ancient Chinese Compass, which was known as "Sinan" , was very different from the compasses we use today. Sinan involves the shaping of a piece of naturally magnetized metal ore into a spoon like artifact, where its handle is south pointing when spun to rest on a flat surface. Why spoon? A reasonable rationale is the "borrowing" of the Big Dipper in the sky! If you are able to find the Big Dipper, it will point you to the location of Polaris. There! You have your north!
